Notifications have their own delivery tools. They aren't delivered using the E-mail or SMS Robots.

Delivered by using either the Notifications delivery scheduled task or the Deliver e-mail notifications link in the Notifications subscriptions tool. |

Each subscription has its own setting for how old a notification can be (one for e-mail, one for SMS). Notifications which reach this age are marked as Too old/abandoned and not delivered by e-mail or SMS. They do remain available in the notifications viewer.
